What Is Quality Time

The time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time.”  – Bertrand Russell

An important aspect of a full life is spending quality time doing things you love or being with people you love.

What is Quality Time?

Quality Time is a term used to describe time spent with close family, friends or loved ones, or on something you enjoy, that is important, special or productive. Quality time is time set aside in which you pay full, undivided attention to the person or matter at hand. Quality time is a practice in mindfulness.

Nuno from Heart Ki explains, “It’s often said time is an illusion. Linear time is. That’s the time you can’t stop. The time in the clock. The cycles of day and night. The time Earth takes to circle the Sun. Tomorrow the Sun will rise, and the Earth will continue to circle its star, moving along its trajectory. Linear time moves forward no matter what you do. You can’t control it.”

Nuno continues, “There’s also another kind of time, and that is spiritual time. Time flies when you’re having fun. This happens because your spirit is in tune with the experience that is pleasant. It’s enjoying it fully, completely immersed in it. It loses track of linear time. And as it goes through it, the energy transforms and shifts.”

Quality Time Transforms You

Quality time is a mindful practice that transforms you from linear time into spiritual time. As the world around you – all of the noise and distractions – melts away, you are left in the Here and Now, experiencing this very moment with all of the senses. You are connected to your true self and temporarily disconnected from the constant bombardment of thoughts and worries and anxiety.

Spending quality time with people you love, or doing things you love, improves mental and physical health and overall well-being by promoting a sense of meaning and purpose, joy and contentment. Self-care is vital to maintaining a healthy relationship with yourself, producing positive feelings, improved confidence and self-esteem.

The Benefits Of Quality Time

Here are a few benefits to spending quality time doing something you love:

  • Increases productivity.
  • Boosts Immune System.
  • Improves Self-compassion.
  • Promotes a Sense of Self (understanding, and getting to know yourself better)
  • Ability to Give More of yourself.

What’s more, studies show that people who spend time together were more likely to experience “happy” and stronger relationships, improved communication, stress relief, and reinforced the bond between them. And we all know smooth relationships make for a good quality of life.

Quality Time & Togetherness

According to Gary Chapman, “A central aspect of quality time is togetherness. I do not mean proximity. Togetherness has to do with focused attention. A husband who is watching sports on television while he talks to his wife is not giving her quality time, because she does not have his full attention. A husband and wife playing tennis together, if it is genuine quality time, will focus not on the game, but on the fact that they are spending time together.”

Here are some tips that Chapman suggests to really spend “Quality Time” with someone and practice active listening:

  • Maintain eye contact when the other is talking.
  • No multi-tasking. If you’re listening, stop doing anything else.
  • Listen for feelings to better understand the other person.
  • Avoid interrupting.

It’s ever so important to take care of yourself, to practice mindfulness, and to spend quality time with the people you love. These are all self-care techniques to keep your “tank full,” with plenty of energy and love and happiness.

Next month I’ll cover “Nature
